The MC5 helped ignite punk before punk had a name.
They were the only band brave enough to play the 1968 Democratic National Convention. While every other group backed down in the face of police violence, the MC5 did the opposite — they cranked the volume and played for the crowd.
They turned Detroit’s raw aggression into a defiant sonic revolt against the system.
